The World: Kanzier

Named after the Kanziery river which flows into the city after bisecting the lands between Maugeter and Ristinnol, Kanzier wallows against The Sea to the south. A more relaxed city than the either of the former, Kanzier's citizens live a peaceful, prosperous life under their elected Regent.

Commerce is king in Kanzier. The Regent is elected from amongst the richest merchants in the city by the richest merchants in the city, and a positive attitude towards business pervades the city's culture from the Regent himself, who is ultimately responsible for the city's treasury, to the lowliest beggar who is almost certainly formulating a money-making scheme even as he spins out his latest tale of woe.

The peace in Kanzier is maintained by the (compared with Maugeter) easy-going City Guard. Most guardsmen serve part-time, running a business of some kind or fishing the rest of the time. In sharp contrast, the Order of Koira, an all-female Warrior Cult loyal to the Regent deploy with unsettling precision when the situation demands it. It has been many decades since Kanzier faced a serious threat, however, and many doubt whether the Order of Koira will be able to maintain their status when there is no demand for them.

As might be expected, a powerful Guild of Thieves holds some sway in Kanzier. Their activities are kept in check primarily by the presence of the Koirans, but on the whole things have degenerated into a complex system of threats, bribes and rackets. Though not officially accepted as one of the Merchant Guilds, most honest citizens of Kanzier accept their protection payments as an additional tax and get on with their lives.
