The World: Maugeter

Maugeter is certainly the most prominent city in the Realm. Set between two of the arms of Mount Tannair, it is ruled over by a council of Magistrates and protected by an elite and terrifying City Guard.

Maugeter is divided into seven districts by huge walls that divide the lands between the mountain arms. Each of these walls is heavily protected by the City Guard, and special passes are needed to gain access from one level to the next. In addition, any citizen found on the streets after dark must display their pass to the Guard on demand, on pain of imprisonment. Only residential passes are valid during this time - the so-called "visitor's pass" has an imposed curfew.

The city is perhaps most renowned for its weapon production - the peaceful but paranoid Kingdom of Linlishlin and the free-trading port of Kanzier both import their armouries in whole from Maugetan produce. Several of the most prominent weaponsmiths also make their creations available to the general public, and a visit to Tonnedi & Kalukom's, Dacian the Armourer or Porchast's Bowyery & Fletcher is always worthwhile.

Maugeter's Fourth District houses temples to the four civilised gods, Avaras, Lady Justice, Telial and Sahrana. The temples have little political power, and because of the pass system, not nearly as many of the population of the city can visit them as the leaders would doubtless like. Rumours persist of a secret cult dedicated to Nahagarash hidden somewhere within the city, but its location and even district is unknown.

The Maugeter School of Wizardry, whose campus occupies a large proportion of the city's Sixth District, is known amongst the learned as the premiere academic institution in the world. Even non-spellcasters can conduct research within the complex, and prominent wizards from Linlishlin and Kanzier can be found there frequently.

The Maugetan Mercenaries' Guild is world-renowned for its high standards of training and discipline. Members occupy posts throughout civilised lands, with a great many of them standing guard duty against the rising bandit threat. The Guild served with distinction during the Maugetan-Kanziery war of a hundred years ago, and they still have a reputation for honourable conduct within the port city.
